Academics @ BASE
Literature & Critical Studies Department
Here you can learn more about the English Language Arts (ELA) courses you can take at BASE, the curriculum for those courses and about the educators that teach those courses. The Literature & Critical Studies Department helps our students become effective communicators through reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing.
Science Department
Science courses are designed to help students understand the natural world and the processes that govern it. With an emphasis on problem solving and the ability to make predictions about the behavior of matter in the living and nonliving world, students challenge themselves and take ownership of their own growth.
CTE Computer Science Department
Career and Technical Education (CTE) Computer Science courses are designed to teach students skills that can be used in future careers via a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory learning, and work-based learning. This department instructs our students on introductory computer science concepts, design thinking skills, career readiness skills, computer programming & data based management, website development, embedded programming & robotics, and graphic design.
Physical Education Department
Physical education (PE) courses teach students how to perform physical activities, develop motor skills, and learn about physical fitness. The goal of PE is to help students develop the confidence and skills to be physically active throughout their lives. PE courses may also include instruction on teamwork, healthy habits, and social skills related to physical activity. PE classes are held in both the gym on the first floor and in the fitness / weight room on the fourth floor and are given to students two to three times a week because they alternate with students' Seminar classes.
Seminar
All students in grades 9-12 take this class every semester; it meets two or three times weekly, alternating with PE. iMentor (one of BASE's partners) is a part of Seminar in grades 11 and 12 and students meet with iMentor leaders that facilitate college & career readiness and learn how to build & maintain relationships with their mentors. 10th graders receive one graduation required credit of Health instead of the usual guidance credit (all rising 10th graders who have not received this health credit in the 2023-2024 school year will get this implementation in 2025-2026). Starting in the Fall of 2024, ninth graders will receive leveled literacy intervention courses.
Mathematics Department
BASE's courses & electives in math help students explore the relevancy of math in the every day world and how it is important for both college and careers after high school. The department's instruction focuses not only on general mathematics, but also applied mathematics (using mathematical models to solve practical problems that may not seem mathematical at first).
Social Sciences Department
Social science courses are interdisciplinary subjects that help students learn about people and their relationship to each other and the world. This department helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and civic understanding they need to function effectively in a democratic society, possess the investigative skills needed to study the past while making connections to the present so that they can make informed decisions about their future.
Language Department
ENL (English as a New Language) teachers and foreign languages teachers help students become proficient in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and understanding a new language or a language they may not be as proficient in on literary levels. Classes are often structured around sequenced levels, with each level building on the previous one.
Studio Art Department
This department supports individuality as well as community advancement & achievement of human development, social skills, and economic growth within society. Visual Arts enables students to develop personal, intellectual, and inter/intra personal skills through cultivating curiosity and creativity in its classes. Graduation requirements require at least one year of Art. Students sometimes take more than one year via elective options that come up in their program.
Electives
Electives broaden the learning curve and expand the horizon for students at BASE to learn something new and/or something related to the software development pathway and the vision and mission of the school. It even allows them to mentor their peers through courses like PGC and prepare for future careers & college.
